Research and Internships

The Biology Department maintains a strong commitment to experiential learning and undergraduate research. As a student, you鈥檒l participate in at least two experiential learning courses.

Possible on- and off-campus experiences include:

  • Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) developed in partnership through the Tiny Earth or HHMI鈥檚 Science Education Alliance
  • Internships at several sites, including the DNR, Hartley Nature Center, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Continent Ecology Lab
  • Mayo Summer Lab Science Program and research experience
  • On-campus summer research project mentored by a faculty member
  • National summer research programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation

Career Outlook

Graduates of the biology program have gone on to positions in the public, private and tribal sectors in various healthcare, biomedical, biotechnology, ecological and conservation professions. Others have continued their education in medical training (MD, PA, OT, PT, dental, veterinarian, chiropractic, pharmacy) or pursued graduate degrees in fields ranging from public health to molecular genetics and genomics, microbiology, immunology, behavior and ecology.
